PR Stunt Watch: Migration Museum gives hate a red card, Aldi’s Olympic carrot and Pizza Hut sponsors Dominoes

We are back after a one week hiatus. I would love to blame the boys but I genuinely found myself on a boat, drinking rum in St Lucia when I suddenly had a moment of realisation: I hadn’t written Stunt Watch.

My fault, my fault. Hopefully I am making up for it with the stunts I’ve watched or spotted this week. So, without further delay let's kick it off with a homage to our boys:

The Migration Museum

Deep down we all knew it wasn’t Coming Home didn’t we? But we so badly wanted it to. And I dunno if I’m just speaking for myself, as a black woman, but I just knew that if we didn’t win the Euro’s the black and brown boys (who have played superbly all tournament), would receive the most horrendous slander and racism for not lifting the cup.

You know the kind. Telling them they aren’t from here even though they have proudly played for England for their entire lives. But the Migration Museum has hit the nail on the head, with a campaign which looks to tackle the anti-immigration sentiment we have seen gradually building up over the past few years, and peaking with arguments over small boats.

The campaign highlights the contributions of those key players on the team with migrant parents/grandparents. The stats highlighted that 15 out of the 26 male squad could have played for other countries but chose to represent the UK.

From previous Stunt Watches, I have an obvious barometer of success… whether it was being shared in Whatsapp groups and socials outside of our PR bubble, and I saw it everywhere. It triggered discussion and highlighted an important truth that rejects some of the vitriol we’ve consistently been told in the press and on socials.

Has Kevin Met His Match – Aldi’s sponsorship of the Olympics

So I genuinely didn’t even know that Aldi was a sponsor of the Olympics, so much so that I thought they were hijacking it in true Aldi style. But what do I know?

I certainly didn’t expect to see Kevin outside of his usual Christmas spot. But I guess it was about thyme. Do you get it? Do you?!

Celebrating the summer of sport Aldi has roped in Kevin the Carrot and his usual punny, banterful self to follow team GB as they take on an array of sports this Olympics.

And it isn’t just the ad – parents all over the country are being told to look out for limited edition Olympic Kevin plushies, and some of the funniest social posts of Kev la carotte on tour.

I love Kevin, so this was always going to be great to me. But come on, Kevin is wearing Union Jack pants. What’s not to like? A true British icon (yes I said it) rolled out to support some of the best of British talent. Bravo Aldi.

Pizza Hut is official sponsor of Dominoes

I love that humour is being seen more and more in UK comms. I mean I love purpose and all of that, but nothing is better than British bants. We just do it so well.

And who doesn’t love when brands are brave enough to go for their competitors with a few lighthearted jokes. This Pizza Hut campaign made me LOL.

Pizza Hut, who knew you were so funny.

The partnership sees the brand partner with Brixton grassroots Immortals Domino Club, whilst also sponsoring the Dominoes World Championship in America. And they haven’t stopped there. Comedy influencers and social media creators will also promote the campaign through unboxing videos and posts and content shows Dominoes champions enjoying Pizza Hut.

This totally subverts the brand personalities, as I would expect this from Burger King or maybe McDonalds, even Domino’s Pizza themselves. I just hope this isn’t a one hit wonder, and Pizza Hut continues cracking me up.
