Despite my best intentions, I basically do just sit on my arse all day. When I was younger I was OK at sport but now the combination of kids and work seems to take up most of my exercise time. The other day, I was comparing the sizes and fitness levels of myself to my colleagues, just to see how I was doing.
So am I a typical member of the PRO species? Here’s a quick health audit of a sample of staff in our agency:
1. The health nut. This guy cycles the 40-mile round trip to work every single day. He is training for a triathlon and will never touch any food that contains sugar. When he takes clients out, I worry that he bores them to death because a) he never drinks and b) he lectures people on what foods are best to keep your blood-sugar levels constant and cholesterol levels low. If he didn’t run such a high risk of being hit by a car on these roads of ours, he could live forever.
2. The chocolate addict. Although I am partial to some Green and Blacks, I am an amateur chocaholic compared to my boss. NEVER ask her what her favourite type of chocolate is. This conversation can last for hours. She knows every cocoa emporium in London and beyond (apparently Piccadilly is great if you have money burning a hole in your pocket). She has to have a chocolate fix before lunch, after lunch, before dinner and after dinner. If there’s no chocolate around, you don’t want to be around her.
3. The lazy sod. This bloke makes me feel super fit. If he wasn’t so charming on the phone and such a great writer, he would never hold on to this PR job, because he’s no eye candy and his eating habits can put you off your lunch. But he’s not completely inactive. He never stays in his chair for long, because he has to have a fag every ten minutes.
4. The champagne Charlotte. You have to admire this girl’s stamina, she goes to parties every night and yet always bounces into the office full of the joys of spring. I should take whatever she’s taking (only I suspect it may not be legal).
