There’s no doubt it’s tough being a woman in PR. They make up the majority of the workforce, they definitely do most of the work, but do they get paid for it? No, the top salaries go to the top bods, and guess what? They are usually men.
Now I think it would be great to have more women working as senior managers in PR. Just as long as they are not bossing me around. I am not the first person to express a preference for a male boss. It seems rather sad in this day of relative equality in the workplace (I know it’s not perfect, but just see an episode of Mad Men to remind yourself how awful it used to be), that women are still being accused of being worse at their jobs because of ‘hormones’ and ‘emotions’. But I have to say that my worst bosses have been women.
Here are three that deserve a special mention:
The control freak. This manager was so insecure that she couldn’t trust anyone around her to do anything without her input. She was on my back all the time, wasting time checking up on small tasks that took longer to talk about than do. When it came to my review, she nitpicked about every part of my work. I had been used to having male bosses who only had a vague idea of what I got up to …
The mother hen. This boss was overly concerned with my wellbeing, to the extent that she often asked me extremely personal questions that were not appropriate in the workplace. What happens at the clinic is between the doctor and me! And I didn’t want to hear about her love life either, but that didn’t seem to be an option.
The mad one. Men do seem to be simpler creatures, but women’s more complex emotions can get out of control sometimes. With this manager, her feelings were obviously very hard to contain, and if she was in a bad mood, boy did we have to suffer. And the office furniture got a tough time of it too.
The reason my male bosses have been so much better is because they are lazy. They can’t be arsed to check up on me, as long as I get the job done that’s fine by them. I just have to be careful not to get it done too quickly, or they’ll realise how efficient I can be when I try, and give me even more to do.
But enough of belittling women at work! Why not move to the domestic arena too? I have often heard it said that women are incapable of stacking a dishwasher properly.....
