This whole diversity in PR jobs debate has got me thinking.
There are many things I love about the part of Surrey where I live. The local schools are excellent, the tennis club is well equipped, there is a Waitrose.
There is just one downfall. Everyone is the same round here, and many of us do similar jobs.
Most of my friends work in the media and their partners all seem to be accountants or lawyers. This makes dinner parties frequently dull and it's all becoming rather difficult. The other night, one of my friends was trying to explain IRR during dessert!
My only hope is mixing with a diverse group of people is through work. Only I don’t, because I work in PR.
I was chatting to a new journalist contact the other day, and found out that we’d both gone to the same school. A good school as it happens (not that you’d know it from my abysmal academic record). I asked them how they got their job, and found it was through a friend. Someone else who had gone to our school! I then realised that I had heard of at least half the vacancies I have applied for through the grapevine and a very middle-class grapevine it is too. It is a small world if you work in PR. And as was reinforced by a certain recent BBC documentary, a privileged one.
I often wonder how I have got to this fairly lofty position despite my questionable skills, and the answer is obvious. It’s not what I know, it’s who.
Here’s a checklist of characteristics most of my friends, contacts and colleagues share. Do you also conform to this stereotype? If you do fit into these categories, don't give me call, I've got enough friends/colleagues like you!
1. Middle-class upbringing
2. White
3. Under 50 (probably under 40)
5. Public-school educated
6. From the south of England (or at least no discernible regional accent)
7. Living in or near London
8. No (apparent) disability
9. Above-average attractiveness (Hmm, this one is hard to quantify, not sure my partner would agree that I meet this criteria)
10. Christian or Jewish background.
