Social media users undergo withdrawal experiment

Just how addicted are you to social media? That's the question that the research project, commissioned by first direct, focused on. They asked 40 people from across the UK to change their normal social media behaviours and deactivate their Facebook/Twitter accounts for a month. Many felt isolated, unable to use these sites to 'socialise' and contact friends and family. Dr David Giles, an expert in social media psychology and a Reader in Media Psychology at Winchester University, said: "Some people would argue this addiction to social media is eating away at people's lives, but what most of these so-called addicts are doing online is profoundly social. "The average internet user today is not the bedroom hermit of the 1990s but a savvy individual with a smartphone who openly manages his or her entire social life and personal relationships online." The results from this study are revealed in this report published by first direct, the findings of which will help influence its customer communications strategies.
