My Day
6.15am: Woken to ‘Daddy… Daddy…’, the human alarm clock clicks in once again. On goes Radio Four to catch the early news while getting myself and the family ready for another working day.
7.30am: All fed and watered for the day, race to the train expecting it to be on time … it’s delayed. Finally, I’m on a train to London with just enough time to check overnight emails and the million and one Google Alerts.
8.15am: Through Leicester Square and I’m purchasing a vital, and simply amazing, cappuccino from Gelupo, across the road from the new office in Soho. Parked waiting for my computer to kick in, I scan the papers to see what’s going on, standard for us in the trade. Check in with all client Facebook and Twitter accounts to see what’s been going on and whether the team needs to respond – usually one or two we have to deal with. Quick chat with colleague Luke (he’s already seen them) before agreeing actions.
9.30am: Second brew of the day before my head goes deep into 2011 planning mode. That lasts ten minutes before the phone goes and there’s a small, but important, issue with some of the Facebook content we’re developing for a client. A few phone calls to client, designers and digital agency and we’re cooking on Calor gas again – whatever happened to Calor? I look at the site to see what it’s doing. Nice site.
10.00am: Off to a multi-agency meeting. We like to get involved and influence the marketing, digital and ad agencies to not only make sure we’re all consistent, but we deliver as strong a campaign as possible, integration is king. Latest one being the Iggy Pop ads for swiftcover.com, little additions to the ad shoot to set up pre- and post-shoot competitions.
11.15am: Back at the office and a consumer finance brief has come in. It’s a quick turnaround so we’re off into a meeting room for a brainstorm. The new flipchart has arrived so Pritesh starts a session with word association (while pretending to be a middle-aged woman) before we’re rolling out some cracking consumer ideas. Look forward to writing those ideas up later. Thinking makes me hungry so it’s time for lunch. Consult my colleagues = yet another take out from Mooli’s If you’ve not checked this place out, do it! You won’t be disappointed.
12:30pm: Mooli in my face, I check in on what’s happening in the world, plus marketing and PR trades. Nothing spectacular (again) but yet another mention for the Meerkat. Fantastic cross platform campaign sustained over such a long period of time. Will they ever kill him off and have a celebrity funeral?
1.00pm: Quick chat with a national journo about a story I’ve placed “… it’s running on Wednesday“, get in! Now, a few hours to focus on 2011 plans for clients and the business. Temporarily disturbed by a sales call, “can you send it to my junk mail please?”. Planning, mind-maps, planning, mind-maps …
4.00pm: Andy goes on a chocolate run – essential part of the day, mine’s a Yorkie. Chocolate being consumed, Luke and I chat about a sell-in strategy on a big story for later on in the week. The classic Sunday for Monday will be adopted! It’ll be an early Sunday swim with my son before getting back to sell in.
5.45pm: A productive day all in all. Thinking about Hacked Off Flack’s recent piece - Go Home! – I’m off to see my family.
6:00pm: Train time = ideas time. Usually have a few thoughts on the way home, therefore a couple of random emails to the team back at Brazil HQ to reflect on in the morning.
8pm: Baby in bed, peace returns to the Williams household. Cook dinner and chat with the wife, she builds on an already decent new biz idea – it surprises us both!
