My day
6.00am: Woken by either the alarm or my persistent cat, and check my emails and Twitter before I head to the gym.
8.30am: Arrive at the studio, which is also the home of Stardotstar, the digital agency that houses Jam.
9.00am: Skype with our friends from CSV, the national volunteering charity. We’re collaborating with it and asking people to volunteer to help community groups make Jam websites as part of this year’s Make A Difference Day on 27 October. Afterwards, I make some tweaks to the website-planning resources on volunteers.madewithjam.org to ensure the volunteers will have all the support they need.
10.30am: Cup of tea and a quick catch up with our business development director. He’s meeting a potential corporate partner today to discuss how they could enable their employees to build Jam websites for the groups and causes that mean most to them.
11.00am: An exciting moment in the studio. Our funders, the Nominet Trust have just sent us the first edit of a video showing how our project has impacted one of the not-for-profit organisations that has helped us design Jam. It’s brilliant to see Bob from Huddersfield Canal Society on camera, talking about how the society is already using its Jam site to encourage new members and volunteers – although it’s less fun to see myself onscreen. One of my colleagues comments that I have much whiter teeth on TV. Slightly unnerved.
12:00pm: Hole up in the meeting room with Rich, one of our creatives. We’re putting the finishing touches to another short video demonstrating how to use the Jam editor to make beautiful, one-page websites. Yours truly has been appointed voiceover artist, which is a little less scary than being filmed. Luckily, Jam’s easy to use, so our videos are straightforward.
1.00pm: Grab a sandwich en route to MediaCity UK. I’m one of the organisers of the MediaCity social media surgery, a drop-in event kindly hosted by the BBC where local not-for-profit organisations can come along to get free one-to-one advice about using social media and digital tools. You never know who’s going to show up; it’s a really good way to keep in touch with people, learn about how people are using the web and discover what barriers they’re facing.
4.00pm: Back at the studio, I spend a bit of time answering user questions, posting how-tos on our user community pages, and checking out new Jam sites to see what people are doing with the tool. I love how different organisations’ sites reflect their personalities – and the passion of their members.
6.00pm: Hit the tram home, but spend my journey buried in Twitter, following the goings-on at #nfptweetup in London. I’ve been working in not-for-profit tech since 2006, and I never fail to get inspired by seeing the creative ways the sector is using digital tools.
7.00pm: Collapse on the sofa with my husband (not to mention the cats).
Make a Difference Day 2012 is all about professional skills sharing. Volunteers from any sector are invited to run workshop sessions for their local community groups. Full support is available through volunteers.madewithjam.org, videos.madewithjam.org and help.madewithjam.org. A voucher for a three-month free Jam website is available for each chosen cause on completion of a workshop session.
