It’s fair to say I’m somewhat unpopular in our office when it comes to choosing our playlist for the day. My taste in music is diverse, so my favourite playlists on Spotify range from country hits, to disco ‘classics’ and some very shameful power ballads. I’m open to just about anything, so my colleagues never know what to expect when it’s my turn to choose what we listen to.
I do find that listening to music helps boost creativity, which is incredibly important in the PR industry. It’s also important to listen to something that will aid concentration and, for me, that means no fast, dance beats or roaring, heavy metal. It must have a slow-to-medium pace, and be preferably something I don’t know the words to! I often find myself singing along and questioning ‘who sang this?’ or ‘how many weeks was this at number one?’ instead of having my head buried in the task at hand.
A Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay
It’s hard not to like Coldplay in my opinion, and what a great way to start the day than listening to Chris Martin’s dulcet tones. I personally miss the days of The Scientist and Yellow, which really were relaxing tunes! A Sky Full of Stars, however, is pretty easy-going with just enough repetition to help get you into a good work flow.
Rebellion (Lies) by Arcade Fire
This is my favourite Arcade Fire song by far. Whilst listening to Arcade Fire on Spotify isn’t half as good as seeing them live, it’s still enjoyable and great for productivity!
Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn
It’s possibly Marc Cohn’s signature (and only successful) song. I’ve included this in here because it’s upbeat and great for building motivation – there’s no denying it!
Can’t Stop by Red Hot Chilli Peppers
This is an all-time favourite of mine. I love the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and they’re great for some afternoon listening. This song in particular is perfect to have on in the background when you’re powering through some lengthy copy.
All I Want for Christmas by Mariah Carey
This is quite specific to the festive period but I believe – as Aberfield’s resident Christmas ambassador – that it can be played and enjoyed all year round. If my colleagues allow!
