You get the sense that Cameron feels unbeatable at the moment. Not in an arrogant, snide way like the Portuguese genius that is Ronaldo, but because our Dave is a guy at the absolute top of his game. I’ve only felt this rarely before, in a sporting sense actually (and it was brief!) but you feel unstoppable. You’re absolutely on it; the world seems to move in slow motion. You anticipate problems, communicate with your team before issues develop and are able to nail the application home as and when is required.
You can see this happening before our eyes with Cameron. He looks like the leader this week, he looks in control and every time he’s on television or radio he delivers right on message. In fact, almost better than “on message” because he has that Blair like capacity to look like he’s talking common sense, and is at one with the feelings of the British people. This seems to take the steam out of even the best interviewers, who see little point in pursuing a difficult line of questioning when Cameron has negated the issue.
As long as the Tories don’t over expose Cameron (and I’m not sure a Prime Minister can be overexposed?) then it looks like a long, steep, winding and slippery road from here for the Brown/Mandelson circus. Unfortunately for them, in politics, there is no transfer window.
