A broadcast PR specialist talks PRmoment through his day

Ricky Vazquez is a business partner at Ogilvy PR in London, where he leads the broadcast and digital PR team and is one of the most prominent broadcast specialists in the UK PR industry.

My day

6.00am: The darling of my life is also the reason for my somewhat reduced hours of sleep at the moment. Touch wood, my newborn son Joshua will soon settle into a proper sleeping pattern… A quick Blackberry check for overnight emails from our colleagues in the US and then off to our Canary Wharf office in style – I’m travelling by scooter!

9.00am: I’m breathing broadcast and social media, and throughout the day I’m monitoring TV news coverage from around the world as well as several social media sites.

10.30am: Meeting with my broadcast team to kick off strategy and planning for the forthcoming Philips broadcast project. We will be supporting Philips’s lifestyle product division at next month’s IFA in Berlin, which is the world’s largest international consumer technology fair. There’s plenty to get going with – B-roll production, on-site filming arrangements, broadcast media training, multilingual and Pan-European TV media sell-ins, creative media hooks for three main products.

1.30pm: Heard from someone in the consumer PR division that today’s lunch specials in the Ogilvy staff canteen are cheesy Burritos and Paella. Meet a group account director from OgilvyOne on the way to the canteen and we have a brief chat about some hot mobile marketing issues.

2.00pm: This after-lunch meeting with our video director and broadcast editor is my favourite part of the day. Today we’re deciding on the most suitable rough-cut techniques and voice-over styles for an internal comms "plain English-style" animated video for our client Mattel.

3.00pm: Meeting with our key digital strategist to brainstorm creative ideas for an IBM social media programme. We're discussing the best use of Twitter, Linkedin and a Facebook application.

4.00pm: Weekly strategy meeting with the London office business partners and our European MD Ash Coleman-Smith. We’re still on a high since learning that our Barbie 50th birthday campaign has been shortlisted in the Broadcast Innovation category in this year’s PR Week Awards. Fingers crossed!

6.30pm: Have a quick after-work drink (Coca Cola only, remember I need to drive that Scooter home) with my broadcast team at the in-house Ogilvy Bar. There’s a Karaoke night already in full swing but we decide to leave that kind of fun to the Ogilvy advertising guys…

8.00pm: Home at last. I’m happy to be reunited with my partner and little Joshua. We spend the rest of the evening indulging in what else than some quality broadcast programmes.
