PR Officer - British Motor Museum

Salary: £33,000 - £37,000 (depending on experience)

Contract Type: Permanent, full-time (37 hours per week)

Reports to: Head of Collections & Engagement

JOB PURPOSE

As PR Officer, you will play a pivotal role in developing and delivering the Trust’s PR strategy, identifying and telling the stories of Britain’s automotive heritage, our Museum, collections, work and team. You will be adept at uncovering the unseen narratives within an organisation and sharing them effectively with targeted audiences across the PR spectrum in ways that build the public profile, brand and visibility of the organisation.

In addition to the Museum and charitable Trust, your PR remit will also cover a trading subsidiary with a number of revenue streams including a thriving conference business. Your work will help to drive commercial business that helps to fund the charity. An adaptable approach, a flair of creativity and the ability to work independently is vital for this varied role.

You will be ambitious in developing strong networks within the sector, building valuable relationships with journalists, media outlets and online influencers.

MAIN DUTIES

  • Lead on all media-related work
  • Proactively develop and implement an annual PR plan
  • Craft and circulate timely and engaging press releases targeting regional, national and international media contacts and influencers
  • Build and maintain relationships with key media contacts and sector influencers, fostering constructive relationships that capitalise on their reach
  • Actively seek out new PR opportunities and secure positive media coverage to engage with target audiences
  • Pitch articles/interviews and securing positive media coverage (news stories, opinion pieces, features, reviews, listings, thought leadership or other editorial coverage) that showcases the breadth of the Museum’s charitable and commercial offering and its value to audiences, visitors, clients and funders
  • Respond efficiently to requests for interviews, statements and publicity photos and assess the value of filming requests, approving and prioritising these as appropriate
  • Maintain a comprehensive, up-to-date VIP list - producing and managing invitations for press launches and networking events
  • Stay informed about external media stories and the wider news agenda relating to the organisation and the sectors that it operates in and represents
  • Actively monitor and respond to online review sites to support a positive online reputation
  • Use the Trust’s cuttings service and reporting subscription to measure and evidence your success and where required, produce statistics/data for internal and external (funder) reporting
  • Identify and apply for suitable external awards
  • Work collaboratively with the Marketing team to ensure that key messages (both internal and external) are communicated in a clear, concise and consistent tone, with particular consideration to accessibility, equality and inclusion
  • Provide support for internal and external Marketing communications activity where appropriate, including the Trust’s social media accounts and activity
  • Build relationships with other departments in order to develop PR campaigns that support the objectives of the Trust and its trading subsidiary
  • Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to support and facilitate crisis communications, if required
  • Take responsibility for your own health, safety and welfare, ensuring compliance with Trust’s Health and Safety policies, procedures and safe systems of work
  • Be responsible for your own behaviour and act in a manner that avoids and discourages any form of discrimination or harassment; to comply with the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy
  • Undertake to familiarise yourself with the data protection procedures set down by the Company as a result of the General Data Protection Regulation
  • Actively and positively contribute to the success of the business in delivering your duties and any other business-related activities which may reasonably be requested


SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES

Expected:

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a PR and communications-related role
  • Demonstrable track record of developing and implementing successful PR and communication strategies
  • Experience of shaping the media agenda
  • Adept at identifying story opportunities and maximising coverage
  • Demonstrable experience of managing media enquiries, producing press releases and contributing to social media for business
  • Established relationships with a network of media contacts and influencers
  • Exceptional interpersonal, and influencing skills with the ability to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Demonstrable experience of visual content creation
  • Experience of commissioning and managing photography and video shoots
  • Excellent copywriting, editing and proofreading skills, with exemplary attention to detail
  • Outstanding organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to work to tight and competing deadlines
  • Knowledge of reputational management and crisis communications
  • Digitally savvy with experience of website Content Management Systems and bulk email software

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in the charitable or cultural sectors
  • Existing contacts with other arts, culture and educational organisations
  • An interest in or passion for social history, cars or the automotive industry
