6.00am: Wake up and go to the gym (listening to the latest Ministry of Sound compilation blows away the cobwebs), I then have a shower and grab the Jubilee line into the city.
8.00am: Get into the office half an hour early. Since we are growing so much we are looking for a new account assistant, so I have stacks of great CVs and of course the eventual interviews to go through. Because many are working elsewhere, candidates often ask for interview times first thing in the morning or in the evening.
9.15am: Get to my desk and open the window and sort through my email inbox – dealing with any urgent issues on the accounts that I oversee.
9.50am: Get a summary of the day’s headlines from Google. We have a morning press club – everyone pitches in and flags the more important stories that aren’t to do with The Only Way Is Essex or Celebrity Big Brother – but as I was interviewing I could not attend. By monitoring the media first thing in the morning we can keep an eye out for stories that we can provide comment on, on behalf of our clients.
10.00am: With all the urgent stuff handled, I now look at the week ahead and client expectations of deliverables for each account. I set out with each manager their objectives for the week and discuss any issues on the accounts.
11.30am: Weekly directors’ meeting with the MD. Budgets, team structures, new business opportunities, Bradley Wiggins’ sideburns – it’s all on the agenda. This is also a good time for me to air any concerns that I have and to get advice from someone with some grey hair on the best way forward!
12.00 noon: Prepare for monthly progress meeting to be held this afternoon with a client. I need to run through the key performance indicators, and activity for the previous month and be clear about what we are going to deliver in the month ahead. I also check through all the documentation that is needed for the presentation with my account assistant (they truly are the backbone of our team – real rising stars).
12.30pm: Grab a bite to eat and get some city air.
1.00pm: I have two new business proposals to write so I spend some time doing desk research on the industry and the company I am pitching to. I really don’t know what people did before Google! Get distracted by another gold medal for team GB, but get my head back down again as deadlines are often tight.
3.00pm: Leave the office to head out to the client for monthly progress meeting. It is sunny (for once) so we eschew the taxi and walk to Holborn.
5.00pm: Get back to the office in time for a conference call with a US-based client. We discuss its upcoming event, which will be held in Brussels. This is its big European annual event so not only are we involved in the logistics, but we also have to work out how to get the event covered in the media and drive attendance.
6.00pm: I have a few news releases and bylines drafted by my account teams to review and amend before heading home for the night.
7.00pm: Supper (melanzane – hearty food!) and West Wing series 6 on DVD settles me down for a peaceful night’s slumber.
